Nash County’s plans for early voting in the upcoming general election have been put on hold until the state Board of Elections can devise a plan for the Nash County Board of Elections to implement.
Edgecombe County already has a plan in place.
The reason for the delay in Nash County is because the members of the county elections board could not reach a unanimous decision on a plan. The sticking point was Sunday voting, Nash County Elections Director John Kearney said.
The board met earlier this month to decide on an early voting plan. Kearney said the three Democrats on the board — Chairwoman Kelly Shore, Brenda Foster and Dwight Jordan — wanted to include Sundays in the early voting plan. The two Republicans — Paige Wood and Kevin Lewis — were against the inclusion of Sundays.
Kearney said it will be up to the State Board of Elections, with input from the Nash County elections board, to develop an early voting plan for Nash County, adding that he didn’t know when that decision would be handed down.
The board chair is appointed by the governor and is a member of the same party as the governor. The other Nash County election board members — two Democrats and two Republicans — are appointed by the state board. Local elections boards are funded by their respective counties but are under the direct guidance of the state board.
Early voting in Edgecombe County will be held from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, Oct. 20 to Nov. 5, and from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29, and Saturday, Nov. 5.
Edgecombe County’s early voting sites will be in the Carmen Auditorium at the Edgecombe County Administrative Building in Tarboro, the county Department of Social Services office in Rocky Mount and the Edgecombe County Memorial Library in Pinetops.
The deadline for voter registration is 25 days before the election, Oct. 14. Applications to update a name, address or party affiliation may be faxed or emailed. For new registrations, the county elections boards must receive an original application with a “wet-ink” signature postmarked by Oct. 14 and received no later than Oct.19.
After the Oct. 14 deadline, voters can register during one-stop early voting.
For absentee ballots, the voter registration deadline is Oct 14. After this point, only same-day registration during one-stop early voting is available. The deadline for voters to submit an absentee ballot request form is Nov. 1. The deadline for turning in an absentee ballot is Nov. 8.
For a registered voter wishing to receive a ballot through the mail, the county elections boards must receive a letter by mail or fax written and signed by the voter. The letter must list the voter’s name, residential address, date of birth and the address to which the ballot should be mailed.
For Edgecombe County, the letter may be faxed to 252-641-1740 or mailed to the Edgecombe County Board of Elections, P.O. Box 10, Tarboro, NC 27886.
The Nash County Board of Elections fax number is 252-459-1371 and the mailing address is P.O. Box 305, Nashville, NC 27856
