An Ohio-based retail packaging firm is acquiring a Rhode Island company in a move that expands the company's national manufacturing footprint.

Rohrer Corp., of Wadsworth, said Dec. 17 the company had closed on the purchase of thermoformer Jay Packaging Group Inc. of Warwick, R.I.

"I am confident the integration of Jay Packaging Group into Rohrer's network will make both organizations stronger, and position us for further investment, growth and job creation," Jay CEO Richard Kelly said in a statement.

Jay, founded in 1945, creates both plastic and paper packaging and provides printing services. Customers include the beauty, luxury, home and health markets, Rohrer said. Plastic products include, clamshell containers, blister packaging and PET folding cartons.

"Jay Packaging Group is an innovative company with talented employees. It's exciting to expand our operations to the East Coast and invest in the people, plants and profitability of both businesses," Rohrer CEO Steve Wirrig said in a statement.

Along with corporate headquarters in Wadsworth, Rohrer also has domestic locations in Haysville, Ohio; Buford, Ga.; Mesa, Ariz.; and Huntley, Addison and Bensenville, Ill. There also is a plant in Tijuana, Mexico.

The purchase of Jay also helps Rohrer's efforts to manufacture eco-friendly packaging, the company said.

"Jay Packaging Group's Sustainable Procurement Policy and Packaging Goals will help us accelerate the eco-friendly packaging solutions we offer to our customers," said Carmine Lombardi, senior vice president of Rohrer, in a statement. "At the same time, the customers of Jay Packaging Group can now benefit from Rohrer's comprehensive suite of packaging solutions."

Rohrer is owned by Wellspring Capital Management, a private equity firm based in New York.

Rohrer was No. 27th in the most recent Plastics News listing of thermoformers in North America with estimated sales of $98 million.
